I was the Art Director for two teen magazines for almost a decade, managing creative, production and editorial. In this extremely fun, but fast paced environment, we produced the creative ideation ourselves, used our staff photographer to do the in-house photoshoots and then also did the design/layout and photoshop work ourselves. Retouching and color-correction was done in house and then sent to the printer. Approving proofs was a daily responsibility, along with tracking each page in every step of it’s evolutionary process.
While not for everyone, the aesthetic was perfect for the target audience. There is definitely an art in making a busy page engaging and fun.
We worked on 2 issues in any given month. Each magazine had only a 2 week production cycle since both were published monthly.
